Google I/O 2024: a visual recap of the keynote

Google kicked off Google I/O 2024 on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. They announced updates and upcoming features for their AI platform, Gemini.

Google announced that it was the Gemini Era in a two-hour keynote full of updates and demos.

Here are just some of the things announced:
Ask Photos. Google Photos is getting “Ask Photos” with Gemini.

Gemini Advanced now uses Gemini 1.5 Pro with 1M tokens across 35 languages.

Gemini 1.5 Pro has improvements in translation, coding, and reasoning. Available Today.

Gemini 1.5 Pro will be available in Gmail and the Google Workspace side panel.

Notebook LM will use Gemini 1.5 Pro to create Audio overviews. Users can ask questions and join in the conversation.

Project Astra aims to build an AI agent that can combine video and speech input into a timeline of events for Questions & Recall.

Gmail will summarize emails and email threads, plus provide contextual reply options.

Android will have Gemini at the system leve, using contextual overlays to interact. Gemini Nano will run on device and process data locally and securely.

There were many more topics covered in the keynote, but they did finish on a humorous note saying that they had mentioned the word “AI” 121 times in the presentation, according to Gemini.
